Why Would I Need a Tooth Removed?
Dr. Hernandez-Gil will do everything he can to preserve your natural teeth. There are times, however, when tooth decay or gum disease become so pronounced that extraction is the best way to protect your overall oral health. Injuries are another cause of extraction if the tooth cannot be repaired.
A Quick Look at the Procedure
Simple extractions are very straightforward. Once the area is numbed, Dr. Hernandez-Gil will carefully lift the damaged tooth from its socket and apply gauze to protect the area. In some cases, he will also apply sutures. If the tooth is impacted, he might gently divide it into pieces for easier removal.
We Recommend Dental Implants to Complete Your Smile
While removing a compromised tooth can be an integral part of protecting your oral health, it doesn’t stop there. In nearly all cases other than extracted wisdom teeth, Dr. Hernandez-Gil will recommend a dental implant to replace your missing tooth. Implants are the only treatment that replaces a missing tooth from root to crown, guarding against the bone loss that results from even a single missing tooth.
Dr. Hernandez-Gil has in-depth training in dental implant surgery and restoration, meaning the placement of a crown, bridge, or denture. We leverage advanced dental technology to provide a solid foundation for your smile that can last a lifetime with the right care. He can also provide bone grafts at our Salt Lake office–sometimes on the same day as your extraction–to protect and strengthen your jaw.
Recovering From
the Procedure
Most of our patients are surprised by how easy the recovery period is after an extraction.
If you experience discomfort, you can apply an ice pack to the cheek area and take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. Take all prescribed antibiotics and pain medication, if we recommend them. You’ll want to eat soft foods for as long as you’re instructed and carefully clean around the treatment site to prevent infection.

FAQ About Tooth Extraction
How much is a tooth extraction?
The national average for a simple extraction is about $175, while a complex surgical extraction averages about $800. Since extractions are nearly always considered medically necessary, your insurance should cover at least part of the procedure. Our friendly staff at our Salt Lake City office will provide a personal estimate during your consultation and can help you budget for any out-of-pocket costs.
Does having a tooth pulled hurt?
No. Dr. Hernandez-Gil will begin the procedure by applying a local anesthetic to completely numb the area. We also offer oral conscious sedation and can work with an IV sedation specialist, if needed.
What can I eat after tooth extraction?
For the first week or so, you’ll want to start with foods like yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, pudding, and soup. You can progress to foods like scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, soft noodles, soft vegetables, and bread. Be careful to avoid very hot and spicy foods, which could irritate the treatment site.
Do you extract wisdom teeth?
In cases where the teeth have erupted, meaning they have come in and become visible above the gumline, yes. In cases of impaction, meaning your wisdom teeth are trapped beneath the gums or bone tissue, we can refer you to a local dentist or oral surgeon with the training needed to handle your case.
Can you handle other types of impacted teeth?
Yes! It's not uncommon for the canine teeth, for example, to become impacted. These cases are straightforward, and Dr. Hernandez-Gil can most likely perform your dental procedure in our office.
What is dry socket?
This painful condition develops when the protective blood clot becomes dislodged from the extraction site. Once we remove a tooth, we will apply gauze to stop the bleeding and encourage a blood clot to form. We’ll provide detailed instructions to help you avoid dry socket, which include not smoking and not using straws – in other words, activities that create suction in the mouth.
What if I don’t want a dental implant?
Dr. Hernandez-Gil does provide traditional restorations at our Salt Lake City practice. However, these options will allow bone loss (a natural effect of tooth loss) to go unchecked. This can cause surrounding teeth to shift, loosen, and fall out. Your diet and health will be impacted as a result, and your jaw will also shrink, aging your appearance.
